Subway rider returns cash-stuffed Chanel bag he found on subway

A subway rider pulled off a Christmas miracle for a Manhattan fashionista last week, when he found and returned her cash-stuffed Chanel bag.

“I don’t really think I did anything that extraordinary,” a humble Richard Taverna told ABC 7. “You feel good when you do the right thing.”

Taverna scooped the blue satchel off the 1 train platform Thursday morning at Lincoln Center, not far from his Upper West Side home.

He peeked inside in search of some identification, he said, but all he found was a note written in Russian that he couldn’t read.

With no subway agent in sight, he took the bag home, and unwrapped a big surprise: an envelope with 100 Benjamins hidden inside.

Taverna then did what he said “most people would have done” and delivered the envelope and the pricey purse to the NYPD’s 20th Precinct — the same station where a Manhattan woman had reported losing her purse on her way to vacation in Russia.

“Somebody lost $10,000, so obviously they’re probably going through a lot of duress,” Taverna said about the selfless deed.
