A WOMAN damaged two homes trying to burn off ivy with a “flamethrower”, a court heard.
Dina Whitehouse bought the weed burner to get rid of the climbing plant which was letting insects into her house.
She stood on a tree stump but slipped as she was in flip-flops — torching other vegetation.
That damaged the brickwork and windows of her council house and that of her elderly neighbours.
Steve Young, defending, told Gloucester crown court: “Being green, it didn’t catch fire but smouldered and became very smoky.
“Buckets of water were thrown on the undergrowth but the fire did not go out and the fire services had to be called.”
Whitehouse, 40, of Dursley, Gloucs, pleaded guilty to damaging a building belonging to Stroud District Council by arson on July 22 last year.
Judge Ian Lawrie QC told her: “The kindest thing I can say is that you were stupid, if not foolish.”
She was fined £1,000 and must pay £101 compensation plus costs.
