Pensioner, 84, fighting for life after 'horrific' attack in front garden

An 84-year-old man is fighting for his life after being brutally attacked outside his home.

Heartbreaking pictures show the pensioner covered in blood after the ‘horrific’ assault last weekend in Cannington, Perth.

The elderly man left his house on Henry Street East to investigate a disturbance at around 7pm on Sunday evening.

He was attacked in his front yard and left with a broken nose, a black eye and several deep cuts.

Police have confirmed a weapon was used in the violent incident. Acting Det-Sgt. Alexandra Hill said no belongings were stolen.

Authorities are appealing for information as the pensioner remains in a ‘critical condition’ in hospital.

There seemed to be no motive behind the ‘cowardly, disgusting and appalling act’, Acting Det-Sgt. Hil said.

She told Perth Now: ‘It seems that there is no purpose. This is an 84-year-old man who’s lived in this suburb for 40 years … and been brutally assaulted in his front yard.

‘They are horrific, horrific injuries that this man has sustained to his face. People should be able to feel safe in their own homes.’

Officers have been unable to speak to the elderly man due to the serious nature of his injuries. They say his family has been left ‘devastated’ by the attack.

Police have identified two Caucasian men between 25 and 35 years old who were in the area at the time and are of interest in the case.

An investigation has been launched and anyone who was in the area at the time or has CCTV or dashcam footage of the assault is urged to come forward.
