A Houston man accidentally shot and killed his sister this week while showing off his new gun, police said.
The 19-year-old victim — identified Wednesday as Laura Natalya Rodriguez, a senior at Syracuse University home for the semester due to the COVID-19 pandemic — was pronounced dead Tuesday at a home in north Houston, where cops said a relative accidentally shot her in the neck while handling a firearm.
Rodriguez’s body was discovered by cops in a room along with her 18-year-old brother, KHOU reported.
Police told reporters during a news conference that Rodriguez’s brother was showing off his new weapon when it went off, KTRK reported.
No charges have been filed as of early Wednesday in the ongoing investigation, police told The Post.
An older sibling gave Rodriguez CPR and called 911 after the shooting, which investigators believe was accidental, although interviews were still underway Tuesday, KHOU reported.
“It’s a tragic situation for the entire family, and our thoughts and prayers are with them,” Houston police Sgt. Matthew Brady said.
The woman’s parents were also at home during the shooting, authorities said.
“Prelim info is the female was shot as other family members were inside the home,” Houston police tweeted Tuesday.
Rodriguez was a senior at Syracuse University studying psychology, university officials told The Post.
“We are working on a message to our community now,” a Syracuse spokeswoman wrote in an email.
