The third season of Taylor Sheridan’s intense modern Western Yellowstone came to an end with a bang last year. Fans of the gripping Paramount series still don’t know the fate of Beth Dutton (played by Kelly Reilly) after an explosive package was delivered to her officer, but some viewers think her relationship with Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) could contain some revealing clues.

Rip Wheeler’s fast-tracked romance with Beth Dutton in Yellowstone season three may have provided some ominous foreshadowing for the coming instalment.

The third season of Paramount’s popular drama wrapped up last summer with a series of shocking attacks on the Duttons, leaving their fates unknown.

Ranch owner John Dutton (Kevin Costner) seemed to have been saved a fatal shot to the heart by his mobile phone, while his son Kayce (Luke Grimes) defends himself from approaching assailants.

However, Beth’s demise seems more likely after her assistant opened a sinister package and unleashed a devastating explosion.

Beth is, therefore, expected to at least be severely injured heading into season four, though some viewers believe she may already be dead when the series returns.

One pessimistic fan recently took their theory to Reddit when they realised Beth and Rip’s unexpected happiness in season three may have been a sign of impending tragedy.

They started off by admitting: “I really want to hope that Beth is not dead.

“But the fact that the writers sort of accelerated the love story between her and Rip in season 3 seems like a very deliberate choice to make her potential death pack more of a punch.”

The troubled pair have been seeing each other on and off since they were teenagers, though an intervention from Beth’s adoptive brother Jamie (Wes Bentley) originally drew a rift between them.

After sporadically sleeping together throughout the first two seasons, the couple have finally settled down and made their relationship official.

Beth even proposed to Rip when the rugged ranch hand admitted he was having trouble working up the courage to ask her father for his blessing.

Sadly, it appears wedding bells may not be on the horizon after all, as this fan proposed their newfound happiness was simply included to make Beth’s passing even more painful.

They continued: “[It’s] like they wanted to give the fans everything they’ve been waiting for (with Rip) before they take it all away.”

That being said, most fans are finding it hard to imagine a season of Yellowstone without a single appearance from Beth.

One of the most headstrong and provocative characters on the series, Beth provided the ranch with the much-needed female perspective that it needed before the arrival of Teeter (Jennifer Landon) and the barrel racers.

The Reddit user explained: “I really hope she isn’t dead because she’s my favorite character.”

“She’s the most layered and complex character to me and without her the only real female energy left on the show/in the family is mopey Monica (ugh).”

Rumours are also circulating around Yellowstone’s ongoing production in Montana, as Beth star Kelly Reilly still hasn’t been spotted on set with the rest of the cast.

After her office was blown up last season, Beth may be too injured to venture outside, or Kelly Reilly’s presence may not be needed on set this year at all.

Filming is hopefully making good headway, so it’s expected Yellowstone’s fourth season will keep up the Paramount show’s tradition of releasing over the summer.

Yellowstone will return with season 4 in 2021 on Paramount.
