Eliza Butterworth has starred as Aelswith, the wife of King Alfred (David Dawson) since the first season of The Last Kingdom premiered on BBC Two. There have still been no updates on when the final instalment of the historical drama will finally hit its new home Netflix, but Eliza has recently treated fans to a look behind-the-scenes on her Instagram page.

The Aelswith star posted a touching tribute to her Last Kingdom colleague Alexander Dreymon, best known as Uhtred of Bebbanburg, on her Instagram Stories this week.

Her latest update featured a short clip of Alexander in full costume on the set of season five.

She captioned the video: “@Alexander.Dreymon you are an angel!!!

“Could not be prouder of you and our @TheLastKingdom family!”

Eliza then gave fans an exciting update on the show’s production.

“The filming of the TLK special has begun! So amazing!” she exclaimed.

In addition to a fifth and final season, The Last Kingdom will officially conclude with a feature film titled Seven Kings Must Die.

The final episodes are expected to be released in 2022, while the film could be released to streamers by the end of the year or early 2023.

In the video, her co-star Alexander was just as excited to be back on the set of Netflix’s popular medieval drama.

“I’m on the set of The Last Kingdom,” he told fans.

“The first time I was on this set was November 2014, and back then I had no idea that we were going to get to stay on this wonderful adventure for as long as we have.”

Alexander has been part of the show’s main cast since the beginning, along with Emily Fox as Brida and Ian Hart as Father Beocca.

His latest post seems to confirm Uhtred’s survival in season five as he’s also poised to lead the show’s feature-length finale.

However, nothing is certain when it comes to The Last Kingdom, and fans should still expect to see some bloodshed when the series finally returns.

Viewers have been waiting since April 2020 for new episodes to hit Netflix, but the cast’s latest updates have raised hopes an official release date will be confirmed soon.

In her IG Stories, Eliza also gave a shout-out to another co-star who joined the main cast in season two.

She wrote: “Jeeeeeez!!! The phenomenal [Cavan Clerkin] as Father Pyrlig in @thelastkingdom season five!”

Her post was accompanied by a quote from Pyrlig: “We are never truly lost. God will find you.”

Thankfully, it seems Cavan will indeed be reprising his fan favourite role in the next season along with Eliza and Alexander.

The Last Kingdom seasons 1-4 are available to stream on Netflix.
