The Adorable Reason Why Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Might Name Their Baby After Zara Phillips

The Adorable Reason Why Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Might Name Their Baby After Zara Phillips

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s baby is due very soon — which means the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have likely already decided (or are close to deciding) on a name for the so-called “royal-to-be.” As with most royal babies, fans already have a running list of potential royal baby names Prince Harry and Meghan Markle might choose for their firstborn.

When decided on a name for their royal baby, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have to consider the royal family name rules. And while there are more than a few guidelines, one, in particular, is a must. In the royal family, it’s considered protocol to name a baby after a royal family member — which is how so many end up with names like Philip, Edward, George, Elizabeth, and Anne. One royal family name possibly on the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s minds? Zara, after Prince Harry’s cousin, Zara Phillips.

Will Prince Harry and Meghan Markle name their baby after Zara Phillips?

Although we won’t know their decision until after the royal baby’s arrival, many suspect if Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have a girl, they could name their daughter either Diana, Elizabeth, Victoria, or Alexandra.

Alexandra belongs to Queen Elizabeth’s great-grandmother, Queen Alexandra and has a very on-brand meaning for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. According to Babble, Alexandra means “helper of mankind,” which lends itself to the duke and duchess’s philanthropic passions. Some also believe they might opt to name their daughter after Queen Victoria to honor the legendary ruler and their feminist beliefs.

While these are all excellent name choices, we think the Duke and Duchess of Sussex might surprise us all and name their little princess after Princess Anne’s daughter, Zara.

According to Good Housekeeping, Prince Charles helped choose his niece’s name and was particularly drawn to the special meaning behind “Zara,” which means “bright as the dawn” in Greek. However, that’s not why Prince Harry and Meghan Markle could choose to name their daughter after their royal cousin. In addition to its Greek meaning, Zara also means “flower,” aka the nickname Meghan Markle’s mom gave her. The name could be a sweet way to honor her mother without breaking a royal family rule.

If Prince Harry and Meghan Markle welcome a baby boy this spring, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have quite a few royal names to choose from. Some of the top contenders include Charles (for obvious reasons), Philip, and Albert (King George VI’s birth name).

In addition to these royal family names, some have gotten quite creative with potential names. One of the most unique — and sentimental — names at the top of the list? Spencer, after Princess Diana’s maiden name. Naming their firstborn son after the Spencer family would be a special way for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to honor the late princess without straying too far from the royal family name rules.
