And the cast are so optimistic about the prospects for The Larkins, ITV’s new adaptation of HE Bates’s novels, that Bradley Walsh, wheeler-dealer Pop Larkin, is selling the Kent-based show as the next Downton Abbey – and one that could boost tourism. The Chase presenter, 61, said: “The appeal will not just be national but international and universal. The Americans loved Downton Abbey and this is the sort of show they’ll love, too, and they’ll want to visit Kent.”

The 1990s Darling Buds starred David Jason and launched the career of Catherine Zeta-Jones, who played Mariette. The coveted role this time goes to Bridgerton star Sabrina Bartlett, 30.

She said: “I think in a world governed by iPhones, everything’s so quickly accessible to us. We can fly where we want; we have the internet. I think the Larkin life depicts a much simpler, purer existence.”

The six-part series also stars Joanna Scanlan, 59, as Ma Larkin. ? The Larkins, ITV, 8pm, tonight.
