The Joker is easily the most iconic and beloved Batman villain of them all.
When it comes to movies, comics, video games and television series’, no villain from the Rogues Gallery has received more exposure and attention than the Clown Prince of Crime himself.
In regards to only live action films, Joker has been played by five different actors.
Cesar Romero was the first to do so, having starred in the 1966 Batman movie – based on the popular ’60s TV series that starred Adam West as the Caped Crusader. Jack Nicholson played the character 23 years later in Tim Burton’s Batman (1989), starring alongside Michael Keaton.
Heath Ledger played Joker in the second film of Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, The Dark Knight (2008), winning the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
Jared Leto would also play the character in the 2016 Suicide Squad. Finally, Joaquin Phoenix starred as the villain in the 2019 standalone film, Joker, earning the Academy Award for Best Actor.
Now, there aren’t any hints to suggest that Jake Gyllenhaal will be cast as Joker in a future film. But artist JPH_photoshop had some fun piecing together some incredible fan art work that depicts the October Sky and The Day After Tomorrow star as the Joker.

Of course, there is some form of a Joker link here. Jake’s sister, Maggie Gyllenhaal, starred as Rachel Dawes – Bruce Wayne’s childhood friend and Harvey Dent’s fiancée – in The Dark Knight. Gyllenhaal replaced Katie Holmes, who portrayed the character in Batman Begins (2005).
There have been rumors about Phoenix’s Joker clashing with Robert Pattinson’s Batman in Matt Reeves’ movie series, but nothing has been confirmed yet. If Reeves does include the Joker, it’s anybody’s guess if Phoenix would reprise his role.
In The Batman, Pattinson won’t be clashing with Joker, but rather Riddler (Paul Dano), Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz) and Penguin (Colin Farrell).
