Tony DiNozzo (played by Michael Weatherly) hasn’t been seen in the world of NCIS since his tear-jerking departure in the season 13 finale, Family First. However, there has always been chatter about a possible comeback thanks to the fact he is alive and well in the CBS universe living with Ziva David (Cote de Pablo) and their daughter in Paris. And now, McGee star Sean Murray has added fuel to the fire with a rather cryptic throwback post on Instagram.

It should be noted that Weatherly’s return to the role of Tony hasn’t been confirmed yet by either CBS, NCIS bosses or Weatherly himself.

However, speculation heightened earlier this year when Weatherly confirmed CBS drama Bull, which he led for six seasons after leaving NCIS, was coming to an end.

With his work diary now opening up, fans have been calling for Tony to make a comeback and amidst the hype, Murray took to Instagram to pay a nod to his former co-star.

Murray took a snap of a framed photograph of a young-looking Tony and McGee from their early days on NCIS.

The NCIS stalwart didn’t give anything away in the caption in regards to a return, simply sharing the hashtags: “#ncis #throwbackbtspic.”

While a seemingly innocent nod to his time working on the show with Weatherly, many fans took it as more evidence to suggest Tony could be on his way back.

The NCIS verified Instagram itself added to the excitement by replying to Murray’s post: “We love a good throwback,” followed by a love heart emoji.

Several fans, however, were less subtle with their enquiries, with @kenziewood133 asking: “Wait does this mean…. This duo is coming back.”

And @princessjulz7 agreed: “Gosh I sure do miss y’all together. Hoping we see a ziva / Tony episode at some point this season!”

Meanwhile, @k10_4d shared their hopes: “Hoping we’ll see Very Special Agent Anthony DiNozzo on the premier!!!”

While @wendyspuler weighed in: “Please say this is a hint he’s coming back. That would be amazing.”

And NCIS fan and Instagram user @esorthirteen excitedly replied: “Toni!! Please comeback!! We miss your wit.” (Sic)

For now though, fans will have to watch this space as to whether Weatherly will be making a comeback in the hotly-anticipated 20th season.

However, this isn’t the first time in recent months that rumours of a Tony return have been addressed by the cast.

Murray admitted to Parade that he has spoken about the possibility of reappearing to Weatherly off-screen.

“I talk to Michael all the time, so we joke about that possibility sometimes,” Murray said.

Weatherly has also dropped a number of NCIS nods on his own Twitter page in recent months, again adding to the rumours.

So will fans finally get to see the fan-favourite agent make a return in the show’s milestone 20th season?

Or despite Bull being done and dusted, will Weatherly move on to pastures new away from CBS?

NCIS season 20 premieres on CBS in the USA on September 19. A UK release date is yet to be announced.
