Viewers of real life medical drama Hospital on BBC Two were moved to tears by the story of brave breast cancer survivor Kate.
Pregnant Kate, a patient at Liverpool Women’s Hospital, was dealt a heartbreaking dilema in Thursday night’s episode.
After being told her cancer had returned after ten years, Kate was forced to decide between aborting her unborn baby or risking her own life by delaying treatment.
Kate had been diagnosed with breast cancer in her 20s and underwent a double mastectomy.
She and husband Glen then had a five year wait to start a family while Kate completed aggressive treatment that was hoped would rid her of cancer for good.
Kate and Glen were then delighted to finally welcome a daughter, but during her second pregnancy Kate was told the cancer to her bones and was now incurable.
During last night’s instalment of the Hospital, Kate bravely opted to delay having aggressive treatment that would have harmed her baby – putting her own life at risk.
Viewers saw the couple welcome their second daughter via C-section six weeks early, who they decided to name Katie-Hope. Soon afterwards, Kate began radiotherapy treatment.
Fans of the show watching at home were left weeping at the mum’s selflessness and praised her bravery over the heartbreaking decision.
"Patients like Kate so selfless and brave, and the genius and commitment of our NHS staff," said one on Twitter .
Another said: "Incredibly moving! Once again in awe of our NHS staff just beyond unbelievable and how humbling to watch Kate, Glen & Family. Welcome to the World Katie Hope you are so blessed to have such an inspirational mummy."
A third added; "Kate’s story is heartbreaking but what a courageous woman she is as with everyone else we seen on tonight’s episode."
