AceShowbiz –Matt Smith goes from a British royal to a part of Sony’s Marvel universe. The actor, who starred in the first and second season of “The Crown” as Prince Philip, is in final talks to star in “Morbius“, an upcoming movie which centers on the Spider-Man villain of the same name.
Variety, which first broke the news, has not learned of the character that Smith will play, except that he will be given a major role in the film. If the deal is sealed, he will join Jared Leto who has been earlier cast as the titular character.
The movie centers on Dr. Michael Morbius, a scientist who suffers from a rare blood disease and attempts to cure himself with the serum that Morbius develops, but eventually transforms him into a vampire-like creature. In the comics, Morbius gains super strength and fangs, and clashes with Spider-Man, until eventually becoming something of a hero himself.
While plot details are not released yet, recent report said that the movie would feature a twisted version of comic supervillain Crown, who later went by the name Hunger, as the main villain. Instead of a mutant like in the comics, he will reportedly be depicted as Morbius’ good friend who suffes from the same blood disease as Morbius and takes the same serum that turns him into a vampire. The story will allegedly center on Morbius trying to stop his former friend from killing humans while at the same time fighting his own blood lust.
“Safe House” helmer Daniel Espinosa is on board as director, with Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama working on the script. “Venom (2018)” producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach are producing “Morbius”. A release date has not been announced for the movie, but speculations on the internet stated that it could be released on October 2, 2020, an opening date for a non-sequel movie which has been booked by Sony.
Matt Smith is best known for his portrayal of The Doctor on BBC’s long-running sci-fi series “Doctor Who“. He exited the show after three seasons and two special episodes in 2014. He went on to star on Netflix’s critically-acclaimed historical drama “The Crown” as the Duke of Edinburgh, the husband of Queen Elizabeth II. He will be replaced by Tobias Menzies in the third and fourth season. The 36-year-old actor also has an undisclosed role in the upcoming “Star Wars: Episode IX“.
