Lorraine Kelly was left emotional on Friday morning, as supervet Noel Fitzpatrick appeared on her show to discuss the recent death of his beloved pooch Keira.

Noel, who has just released a book for children entitled Vetman, paid an emotional tribute to the Border Terrier on the programme while discussing a marathon he recently ran in her honour.

Noel had operated on his late pooch, giving her another year of life after she suffered an accident.

"It was about giving her the option of that, and it was the best year of my life," Noel admitted during the interview. "I'm so grateful."

Lorraine replied: "And you did the marathon, didn't you, with the photograph of her in your pocket?"

"It's so funny," Noel recalled. "I cried for, well. The truth is I couldn't cope. The truth is I woke up every day crying, and I'm treating other people's animals and I'm crying.

"My friend signed me up for the marathon before Covid, and I'm like, 'How am I going to train for that'?"

Noel put in the work between midnight and 3am each night, explaining: "I'd come out of theatre at like 11, go for a run between midnight and three.

"And the week before I've done my last run, a car comes round the corner and I had to jump for cover. I sprained my ankle, so I run the marathon on a sprained ankle, and I was in horrendous pain."

He added: "A really interesting thing happened. I ran it for [Keira], with a photograph of her in my pocket, and when the physical pain met the emotional pain… All of a sudden I was able to let her go, you know?"

Noel finally let the tears flow freely as he recalled the good times with his late pet.

Struggling for words herself, Lorraine told him: "That's incredible. I'm so sorry, I don't want you getting upset, I really don't. But I can really understand it."

"I let her go around mile 19 on the Southbank," Noel added. "And it was beautiful."

"She was a very, very special girl, and you've got some amazing memories," Lorraine said.

And fans at home were also fighting back tears, as they took to Twitter to post: "Watching #Lorraine and I'm tearful over the supervet crying over his dog. Awwww bless him."

Someone else echoed: "Nice one Supervet. Making me sad on a Friday morning. If he's crying – what chance have I got?"

"Actually crying watching Noel Fitzpatrick on #Lorraine!" a third fan followed up, as another wrote: "Noel Fitzpatrick has me in tears. All my love to him!"

Lorraine airs weekdays from 9am on ITV.
