Tragic Fantine is desperate to send her young daughter away to live a better and safer life that she will do anything to raise the money required.
But the BBC drama pulled no punches with the stomach-churning scenes that followed.
She was seen being forced to sell her hair and having it roughly chopped off before she had to make a more disturbing decision to have her two front teeth ripped out.
Later she was viciously raped by a group of soldiers as she struggled to earn a living.
The scenes traumatised viewers watching at home and they flocked to Twitter to post their reactions.
One horrified viewer said: "I watch horror movies for fun but that teeth scene in Les Miserables on the BBC nearly had me reaching for a bucket."
A second said: "The scene where Fantine's teeth were pulled out was horrific. Perhaps I'm getting old but I was an emotional wreck."
Another revealed: "Might actually be traumatised after that teeth thing in #LesMiserables"
A fourth tweeted: "As a complete wimp/snowflake etc. I stopped viewing Les Miserables at the point where she was going to sell her two front teeth.
"Strong stuff. The unmitigated poverty and desperation shown turns my stomach."
The show was praised for its darkness while viewers singled out Lily Collins, who plays Fantine, for particular praise for her powerful performance.
