Next month, a new instalment of the drama anthology series I Am is coming to Channel 4. I Am Ruth follows the increasingly strained relationship of a mother and daughter who are portraying the endemic mental health crisis affecting young people in today’s society.

Created by the BAFTA-winning filmmaker Dominic Savage, I Am Ruth is a two-hour special that was developed and co-authored by Dominic himself and actress Kate Winslet.

The 47-year-old, who also plays the main character Ruth, in the Channel 4 feature-length instalment, is starring alongside her real-life daughter Mia for the first time.

Viewers will watch as Kate takes the role of a loving mother who watches her teenage daughter Freya (Mia Threapleton) retreat more into herself.

She then grows concerned as she witnesses the teen becomes more consumed by the pressures of social media.

Speaking about the special, which will air on Channel 4 in December, Kate shared that she, along with the production team, wanted to tell a story that was honest and highlighted issues surrounding teenagers being online.

Touching on working with Mia, who became an actress in 2018, Kate confessed she didn’t initially think of her for playing the role of Freya.

She said: “I think because I wasn’t sort of pushing for that or trying to manipulate that in any way.

“When Dominic said to me, ‘Well, who should play Freya’ I suddenly went, ‘Oh my gosh well Mia could definitely do it but you’d have to meet with her and you’d have to talk with her and see if you feel she could.’”

After going through those steps, Kate stated that Dominic felt confident that Mia had the maturity to handle some of the serious and difficult themes that are featured in the special.

However, once it was all finalised that the 22-year-old would be given the role, Kate and Mia decided not to talk to each other much about the project as they didn’t want to over plan things.

Despite being mother and daughter, Kate admitted they’re not alike as she added:” She is very different to me as a person, and she is very different to me as an actress.

“Her process is really different. There are some things that are quite similar and there are still things that I am trying to pass along that I think could be useful over the years.”

Although Mia told Kate that she didn’t want to hear certain things as she confidently told her mother that she was going to figure it out herself.

When asked if there were any moments alongside her daughter that she forgot she was acting, Kate confessed it was blurry regarding what was real and what wasn’t.

The 47-year-old stated that although the characters they were playing weren’t real, she couldn’t help but draw on personal experiences throughout.

She continued: “It was really staggering actually how alarmingly free Mia and I were able to be, which I hadn’t imagined.

“My instinct to take care of her had to go away because I knew I had to let her be exposed and hurting and struggling, and that was quite difficult.”

However, Mia enjoyed working alongside her mum as she revealed the chemistry, connection and emotional bond their characters had to have was already there

She said: “ It was really fun actually. It was really good fun and really enjoyable.”
