Kate and Rio Ferdinand's 'tribal' baby name Cree has a special meaning that connects newborn to his siblings

KATE and Rio Ferdinand welcomed their first baby together last week, with the pair revealing they'd called their newborn son Cree in a Christmas Eve message to fans.

The quirky name caught their followers' attention, and it turns out that there is a very special meaning behind it.

According to babynames.com, Cree is a name rooted in history and is of Native American origin.

Its direct meaning is "Tribe name", which is poignant as the little boy is the latest addition in 29-year-old Kate and 42-year-old Rio's brood.

The pair have a large blended family, with Kate stepmum to 14-year-old Lorenz, 12-year-old Tate, and nine-year-old Tia, who Rio shares with late wife Rebecca – and little Cree tying them all together.

And although the couple knew that they were expecting a baby boy, Cree is also a popular unisex name among parents.

The site states: "Cree is a name that's been used by parents who are considering unisex or non-gendered baby names – baby names that can be used for any gender.

"From the word Kristineaux, which French fur traders used for the First Nations people near James Bay. Kristineaux became shortened to Kri or CREE in English."

Pals told The Sun that the couple were “over the moon” about the arrival of the tot last week.

One said: “The birth of their baby is the best Christmas present Kate, Rio and their family could have asked for. It’s going to be more magical than ever.

“Mother and baby are doing great and everyone is excited about the latest addition to the family.”

On Thursday, the proud parents shared the first glimpse of their little one in a sweet snap of Rio and the kids gathered around their Christmas tree in matching green pyjamas.

The top of the baby's head can be seen as he lies peacefully in the arms of the football star's second eldest son.

Kate posted the pic to Instagram, writing: "My whole heart 🤍 Cree Ferdinand … our angel boy we all love you so much 🤍."

Rio posted the same shot, adding: "Cree Ferdinand is home and ready for Christmas! 1 more sleep 🤪🤣 💚."

The sportsman also posted a picture of the tree, with the words 'WELCOME HOME BABY FERDY' draped over one of their windows in inflatable silver letters.

He captioned the snap: "Ain't seen no tree messing with this bad boy" adding: "Picture perfect."
