ITV GMB: Piers and Susanna ‘touched’ by lonely fan’s heartbreaking letter ‘Why we do it’

Piers Morgan and Susanna say they’re ‘privileged’ to host GMB

Piers Morgan, 55, and Susanna Reid, 50, have informed viewers of the latest developments of the coronavirus pandemic since the crisis emerged in the UK last year. The Good Morning Britain duo have presented throughout all three lockdowns and have challenged Government ministers on their act against COVID-19. Fans of the ITV programme have expressed their gratitude to the hosts since March 2020 but they were particularly touched by a letter from a widow who recently lost her husband.

Beginning the show on Tuesday, Piers said: “It touched me this morning. I found the letter on my desk.

“I wish you all the very best. It’s one of the reasons we do this actually. It’s to shine a light into all sorts of people’s lives, particularly in the last year.

“People who are lonely, depressed, anxious, fearful, for obvious reasons, who just maybe want to be informed and entertained. Whatever it is, that’s why we do is.”

Jumping in, Susanna added: “It’s also to just provide company as well.

“It’s one of the great privileges of this job that we’re often one of the voices or only people you might see during the course of your day.”

The mother-of-three continued: “Lots of people are lonely and Linda, you’ve obviously been through a really hard time. To lose your husband of 57 years and to get through last year without him.”

Piers then explained: “He passed away in December 2019 so three months lockdown erupts. It must have impounded the loneliness you feel.

“Presuming that you haven’t been able to see family members. I’m delighted you watch us and we bring you something, put a smile on your face and get you out of bed in the morning.”
