Iceland releases a spoof version of John Lewis Christmas advert

With Christmas adverts being broadcast earlier than ever, shoppers were thrilled with this year’s festive offering from John Lewis which told the story of young boy Nathan showing alien Skye how to celebrate Christmas. He shares traditions with Skye before bidding his new friend farewell and it tugged on heartstrings. However, less than 24 hours after it was broadcast, Iceland spoofed the emotional advert.
In Iceland’s version of the advert, 14-year-old Nathan is seen making friends with Skye who’s head is replaced with a frozen space raider.
The potato shaped like an alien becomes the focal point of the festive advert.
As in the John Lewis video, Nathan spots a something crashing in the woods as he travels home on the bus.
Getting off to explore, he finds an alien has landed and is thrilled to meet the space raider.
As the alien repairs their ship, Nathan starts a snowball fight and the pair even stare longingly at a packet of Space Raider crisps.
Back at home, Nathan even tucks into the tasty treat, much to his sister’s disappointment.
As the ad comes to an end, he tearfully waves goodbye to the Space Raider as the tag line “eat an alien” is shown.
Iceland add: “Space Raiders potato shapes, exclusively from Iceland.”
John Lewis releases 2021 Christmas advert
As the spoof video comes to an end, they added: “With apologies to Iceland.”
Fortunately for Iceland, John Lewis were incredibly flattered by the video.
A spokesperson said: “We’re very flattered that Iceland clearly think our ad is out of this world.”
Iceland added: “We have an incredible range of Christmas foods this year but couldn’t miss this chance to show off one of our most popular exclusives.
“For customers who are looking to change-up their Christmas dinner spread, and surprise a few guests, they could always serve up a few Space Raiders potato shapes along with some of our luxury, triple-cooked roast spuds.”
John Lewis’ Christmas advert thrilled viewers with the soundtrack performed by up-and-coming British singer-songwriter Lola Young who sings a cover of Philip Oakey and Giorgio Moroder’s 1984 hit Together In Electric Dream.
The sweet story also warmed the hearts of many shoppers preparing to hit the high street ahead of the big day.
