Good Morning Britain presenter Susanna Reid has expressed her concerns over smart motorways and the risk drivers face if they break down with no hard shoulder to take refuge on. After being joined by guest Sally Jacobs, whose husband Derek was killed on a smart motorway, Susanna revealed she doesn’t “feel safe” when driving and fears for her family’s safety.

After speaking to guest Sally about the death of her husband, Susanna told fellow ITV host Lorraine Kelly how scared she was.

Loraine remarked: “Morning, what an amazing woman, how brave to talk like that it’s so so important.

“I mean it’s a no brainer isn’t it?” she exclaimed.

Susanna agreed: “I mean honestly! They don’t seem to be working, too many people have been killed.

“Frankly I don’t know about you Lorraine but when I’m on one I don’t feel safe!”

Richard Madeley interrupted: “Well, it’s like being asked to jump out of a plane without a parachute.

“’Well, we’ve got cameras we’ll keep an eye on it’, it’s so counter intuitive,” he remarked sarcastically.
