Homes Under the Hammer presenters Martin Roberts, Dion Dublin and Martel Maxwell still find themselves surprised when they look around certain properties purchased by eager guests on the BBC show. However, Martin has addressed his “key” piece of advice to prospective buyers if they want to make a success of their property venture.

Martin, Dion and Martel follow Homes Under the Hammers guests from auction house through to property development.

The three presenters are always pleased for the buyers when their property vision comes to fruition.

However, sometimes the guests are met with unexpected bumps in the road which add time and money to their project.

Even if prospective buyers take a look around a property first, there will often be a few surprises once they’ve purchased the building.

During a recent instalment of the BBC show, Martin and Dion discussed the steps buyers can take to put themselves in the best position.

Martin began: “The world of property provides an ever-changing and challenging environment which really fascinates me and Dion.

“Yes, but there is one key principle, get it for the best price possible,” Dion continued.

“But that’s not always as easy as it seems,” the Homes Under the Hammer presenter added.

“No, but one way you can stack the odds in your favour is by going to your local auction house,” Martin revealed.

However, when you purchase a property at an auction, guests can often be met with a few unexpected features, as Martin recently discovered.

The Homes Under the Hammer star was looking around a ground floor flat located in New Southgate, London.

But, the presenter was baffled when he noticed the property had a very unique and “weird” feature.

Beginning his search, he declared: “What a lovely front door! First impressions really matter.

“I know it’s silly, it’s just a door but actually it really sets the scene. I don’t know if the rest of the flat is going to match up to that.

“But we always talk about first impressions with a property and a prospective buyer will see that and go, ‘Nice door.’”

As the presenter continued his search, he was brought to an abrupt stop and remarked: “That’s a bit weird.”

Martin had spotted the living room and one of the bedrooms included kitchen units.

“My guess is that was originally the kitchen and it’s been basically taken out to create a third bedroom,” he explained.

“Now, in London, that probably makes sense, a three-bedroom flat is going to be worth more than a two-bed.

“On the other hand, is that good for that living area? I’m so sure.”

Homes Under the Hammer airs on weekdays at 10am on BBC One.
