Grey’s Anatomy had to come to an unexpected end earlier this year thanks to the coronavirus pandemic. ABC has already confirmed the series will be back for a 17th series but when that will be hasn’t yet been announced. There has also already been talks about Grey’s Anatomy coming back for an 18th season.

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Grey’s Anatomy.

Grey’s Anatomy season 16 had plenty of memorable moments in it but it will most likely be thought of as the series where Dr Alex Karev (played by Justin Chambers) left.

Chambers announced in 2019 he would be leaving the show but it wasn’t until earlier this year that his exit storyline was revealed.

Alex left Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital behind to reunite with ex-wife Dr Izzie Stevens (Katherine Heig) who used frozen embryos to have their twin five-year-old children.

Alex is now said to be living on farm in Kansas with his little family.

Alex was one of the handful of remaining original characters left in Grey’s Anatomy.

Following his departure, there are just Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo), Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) and Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr) left in the series.

All of them have been in the medical drama since the first season and will be returning for season 17.

But could actress Pompeo actually be making her own exit after the next series is over with?

Is Ellen Pompeo leaving Grey’s Anatomy?

Pompeo’s current contract expires in 2020 and so while she will be in the upcoming season, it is not clear if she will return after that.

ABC is already making plans for the show’s future with actors Kevin McKidd who plays Owen Hunt, Camilla Luddington who portrays Jo Wilson and Kim Raver, the actress behind Teddy Altman, renewing their contracts.

All three of them have signed up to a potential series 18, if it is renewed, as well as a possible season 19 if the show continues.

But unlike her colleagues, Pompeo’s contact with Grey’s Anatomy has not yet been renewed.

While no decisions have been officially announced, Pompeo opened up on Jemele Hill’s Unbothered podcast about why she has stayed on the show for so long.

The 50-year-old actress said: “If I started the show when I was younger, [like] 25, I probably would have dipped out when I was 31, 32, when my six-year contract was up.

“I knew coming up on 40, it’s like, I don’t want to be out there chasing [film roles]… begging. I’d rather just see this as the blessing that it is.

“A healthy home life was more important than career.

“I didn’t grow up with a particularly happy childhood… I [now] have this great husband and these three beautiful children, so to have a happy home life was really something I needed to complete, to close the hole in my heart.

“And so I made a decision to make money, and not chase creative acting roles.”

Back in 2018, Pompeo also told TV Line: ‘It’s a pretty nice place to work. I like my situation here.

“As much as the idea of something new appeals to me… the truth is I have three kids. I don’t really want to travel and leave.

“I don’t want to be a circus traveller and live in hotels.”

So if this is still the case and Pompeo prefers to stay close to her family, then it does seem likely she will continue starring in Grey’s Anatomy for the foreseeable.

Grey’s Anatomy is available to watch on ABC.
