Fans made it clear that they would love more episodes of The Office, but would it ever happen? Showrunner Greg Daniels talks about possibly revisiting the show.
Steve Carell doesn’t think a revival of ‘The Office’ would work
Fans would love more episodes of The Office. However, Steve Carell doesn’t think a revival would work.
“Because The Office is on Netflix and replaying, a lot more people have seen it recently,” Carell told Esquire. “And I think because of that there’s been a resurgence in interest in the show, and talk about bringing it back. But apart from the fact that I just don’t think that’s a good idea, it might be impossible to do that show today and have people accept it the way it was accepted ten years ago.”
Carell isn’t the only one to weigh in on this. Michael Schur, who wrote for the show and played Mose, also gave his opinion on doing a revival.
Michael Schur said Greg Daniels would have to return if it happens
Schur was asked about the possibility of The Office coming back. He mentioned only one person could handle new episodes of the sitcom.
“I don’t think anyone would ever do that without Greg Daniels’ at least blessing, if not outright participation,” Schur said on The Last Laugh. “Unless he was just like, yeah, go do whatever you want.” He then said that’s what creators of the British Office did for their show.
I mean, Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant had a really wonderful attitude. Because as I’m sure you remember, the announcement that there was going to be an American version of this was met with a loud thud from the critical community. But Ricky and Stephen had this lovely attitude that was like, ‘Yeah, go nuts. We made our thing, there’s DVDs of it on our shelves, we can watch them whenever we want. This won’t retroactively hurt our version.’
Daniels talks about possibly revisiting the show
The showrunner talked to The Hollywood Reporter about possibly doing more episodes of the show. The good news is that he would want to return to do it if it does happen.
“I loved doing The Office more than anything,” Daniels said. “And if we were going to revisit it, I would want to do it. But I am doing these two shows now, so in the near term I’m definitely doing that.”
He continued, “I think when all these rumors started flying around it was when they rebooted Will & Grace. I think people were assuming that an Office reboot would be pretty much like that, getting the entire cast back together and just continuing where we left off.”
Daniels did note that he felt like everything was wrapped up in the show’s finale. He also lowered the hope of it ever coming back.
“I don’t think people’s expectations of getting back in the saddle and doing more episodes of the same show was going to be realistic. But, I don’t know. People seem so into the show still. At some point, maybe, it’s unfair to be a priss and not give them what they want. I don’t know,” he said.
It sounds like Daniels is too busy to think about returning to The Office any time soon. But the good news is that there is a little bit of hope of some kind of return in the future.
