Emmerdale’s Sam Dingle star James Hooton’s life off screen including real age

James Hooton is one of the most recognisable faces on the Emmerdale cobbles. He's been starring in the show since 1995 as Sam Dingle.

His life on the soap hasn't been short of drama, from shootings and kidnappings and cow stampedes- it's always been eventful.

But James lives a much more peaceful life off-screen. He relishes family time with his fiancee Nancy and their children Ava-Rose and Lilly.

It might also surprise you that he's 50 in real life. Here, we take a closer look at his family and time off the soap…

Family life

In real life, James is with Nancy Lucas and has been engaged to her since Valentine's Day 2010. The doting dad shares Ava-Rose and Lilly with her.

He regularly posts snaps of his gorgeous family online. He's had to juggle his personal life with his real life, as when Nancy was in labour with their youngest, he was on set.

He had to rush to the hospital and made it there before their littlest came into the world in three pushes. After the birth, he was able to devote his time to his family for a while.

He told OK! at the time: "Luckily I haven’t had loads on at work either so I’ve been able to spend a lot of time at home."

James is also an eager rock climber, spending much of his spare time refining his skills in the sport. He often takes to Instagram showing himself scaling viaducts and boulders.

He's also revealed that he's travelled to a large number of different climbing spots, including Pateley Bridge and Majorca.

Taking to social media, he wrote of the sunny escape: "I was SO tired last night, I just had to climb into bed!"

He's even climbed the wall of his house in his quest to become a pro rock climber. The post from three years ago garnered a huge amount of praise- as he did the feat in just a pair of shorts.

The task revealed a seriously ripped body and highlighted his strength. Impressed social media users wrote their congratulations to him.

One person said: "You must have muscles of steel." While a second exclaimed: “Flippin’ ‘eck that’s impressive!!”

The sport has given James the ripped body as it involves a serious amount of care strength and dedication. He's managed to bowl his co-stars over with his clips of the climbs too.

Jay Kontzle who plays Billy Fletcher wrote: "That fingertip strength makes my fingers ache – great work Hoots!"

Meanwhile Mandy Dingle actress Lisa Dingle agreed: "Check you out Jiblets!!!!! amazing."

James joked that the clip and the pictures were the result of good camera angles and lighting.
