Liam Cavanagh (played by Jonny McPherson) and Leyla tied the knot on the ITV soap earlier this year. However, their marriage became strained when Liam’s daughter Leanna (Mimi Slinger) died this summer. The grieving dad has admittedly been taking out his demons on Leyla who has continued to support him. But will the Emmerdale couple call it quits if he keeps “behaving like a monster”?

Liam will take centre stage in upcoming scenes on the ITV soap when Emmerdale’s youngsters rally together to help him create an allotment in memory of Leanna.

After Leyla caught him out for paying secret visits to his old house in a bid to feel nearer to Leanna, he agrees to channel his energy into the memorial allotment instead.

Liam’s allotment plans go viral when Amelia Spence (Daisy Campbell) promotes him online as ‘Dr Digg’.

He then gets approached by a journalist who wants to cover the big launch of the allotment, but with limited time left to finish the project, he relies on the help of villagers to pitch in.

With Liam making something positive out of the tragedy of losing Leanna, will this mean he and Leyla will become stronger as a couple?

Or will this positive attitude fail to last, leading Leyla to cut ties with Liam for good?

Jonny McPherson, who plays Liam, recently spoke to Express.co.uk and other media about the storyline.

He explained: “Leyla has been extraordinary really, in terms of her capacity to forgive, understand and accommodate.

“Liam has behaved like an absolute monster a lot of the time.

“He’s said some appalling stuff and lied to her face on a daily basis.

“He’s done pretty much all the worst stuff going, besides infidelity!

“That must have been incredibly difficult for Leyla, but she understands it.

“She’s the one who suggests this allotment as a channel for Liam’s grief.

“It’s something positive to put his energy into. They jointly decide to draw a line and just move forward together.”

Earlier this year, Leanna was murdered by evil Meena Jutla (Paige Sandhu) but at the moment, everyone believes her death to be a tragic accident.

The teen had learnt the truth about Meena and her murderous tendencies before she was cornered by the killer.

Opening up about Leanna’s death, Jonny said: “Yes, after Leanna’s death, the period of grief, depression and all of the repercussions was quite protracted.

I didn’t anticipate quite how protracted it would be, but I guess that’s unique to a serial drama.

“Typically in a finite narrative, you’ll just have a couple of peaks. On a serial drama, it goes on and on, scene after scene, so it’s months’ worth of sobbing and shouting. Just to stop shouting at everyone was quite pleasant!”

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7pm on ITV.
