Dungeons and Dragons may be a popular board game, turned online game, but it has also been turned into various movies for the big and small screens. The latest adaptation is reported to be coming out in 2022, though it has had a rather mixed background before it even hits screens. Express.co.uk delves into all there is to know about the new movie.

Who is in the cast of Dungeons and Dragons?

Regé-Jean Page is the most recently announced member of the cast of Dungeons and Dragons.

As well as the Bridgerton star, some major Hollywood names have been added to the roster.

These include Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez and Justice Smith, with John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein behind the scenes.

What the Dungeons and Dragons about?

This is an interesting question, as it is by no means a simple story when looking at the film’s history.

Back in 2015, Warner Bros began developing the film, with young star Ansel Elgort reported as starring.

This happened again in 2017, by which time production had moved to Paramount Pictures, with a possible 2021 release date.

At this point, actor Joe Manganiello became involved with the production, as a fan of the game, and enlisted help from John Cassel to write a script.

By 2018, the production team changed, and negotiations with Chris McKay began in the search for a director.

David Johnson McGoldrick had completed a draft of the script, and a year later Michael Gillio rewrote this version, and the casting process began.

More was to change, however, as John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein entered negotiations to direct the film.

John previously worked as a child actor, starring in Judd Apatow series Freaks and Geeks, but has since turned his hand to screenwriting and directing.

In 2020, they announced they had co-written a new draft of the script, and the release date was later moved to May 27, 2022.

From here, cast negotiations began, with Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Justice Smith and Regé-Jean Page signing on to join the cast.

At present, little is known about the movie and what it is about, except for its long production history.

However, it is still expected to feature many of the characters fans know and love from the board game.

What is Dungeons and Dragons?

Dungeons and Dragons is a fantasy role-playing game, where one person takes on the role of the Dungeon Master, who is both referee and storyteller of the game.

Players assume characters and must complete a quest as a party, interacting with whatever comes up in the game, as created by the Dungeon Master.

The game has been adapted for the big screen three times before, the first time in 2000 in a movie starring Jeremy Irons, and twice more afterwards.

Some fans are expecting the upcoming film to be a reboot of the 2000 movie, but they will have to wait and see.

Dungeons and Dragons is due to be released in cinemas on May 27, 2022
