Disney to Donate $5 Million for Notre-Dame Reconstruction After Cathedral Fire

Quasimodo would be proud of Disney.
After a fire ravaged Paris’ iconic Notre-Dame cathedral this week, The Walt Disney Company joined the movement to rebuild. Disney promised Wednesday to donate $5 million for what CEO Bob Iger described as “the restoration of this irreplaceable masterpiece,” per Variety.
Notre-Dame happens to have a unique Disney connection. The architectural marvel served as the setting for the Mouse House’s classic animated movie “The Hunchback of Notre Dame.” The 1996 film was based on acclaimed French author Victor Hugo’s novel of the same name. It follows Quasimodo (voiced by Tom Hulce), the cathedral’s lonely bell-ringer as he tries to get society to accept him.
Aside from being part of Disney’s past, Notre-Dame is also a beloved symbol of France. Iger called it a “beacon of hope and beauty that has defined the heart of Paris and the soul of France for centuries.” Disney’s pledge is only a small portion of the reported $900 million that people and companies around the world have already offered in the days since the fire.
The cause of the fire remains a mystery. An investigation is ongoing, even as plans to restore the cathedral continue to gain steam — and financial support.
