In the new series of Channel 4 programme A Place in the Sun, which began last month, host Scarlette Douglas told Express.co.uk in an exclusive interview that despite wanting to meet her house hunter’s criteria, sometimes it is not always possible. She explained the majority of the property hunters in the upcoming series were serious buyers and they sold a lot more homes compared to the last series. However, not all of the guests were happy with some of the houses they were shown. She went on to add that on one occasion, one of the producers of the show was up until 4am looking for potential properties for one fussy couple.
Speaking about what it is like for the presenters when their guests take an instant dislike to a property, Scarlette began: “It’s obviously it’s very tricky and you always want to make sure that you’ve got the right houses for them.
“But it does happen where they just hate it and I guess you have to put yourself in their shoes.
“And if there’s a property that we feel ‘They’re not going to like this one’, we know that we’ve got something up our sleeve that’s going to completely top it.
“So, I think it’s more kind of like, ‘Oh, this is awkward, and I’m gutted that you don’t like it I really, but I know that I’ve got something that’s going to turn you around, and you’ll be so happy.'”
The property expert went on to recall one particular moment during the Channel 4 show, where they were up all night trying to find a couple their dream holiday home.
She continued: “I remember there was one in Menorca with a couple. They were a lovely quite young couple actually.
“And we’ve got to outside property three and they’re like, ‘We just don’t want to go in.’
“So, I said ‘Right guys, listen, we’re going to have to go in because this is your budget, and these are the properties that we’ve got.'”
The 32-year-old went on to detail how she had to be firm with the couple, as she added: “I said to them ‘If you think you can maybe find extra money, then we can change what’s in the line-up and then we can really look for you’.
“So that’s pretty much what happened with all of their properties, they were like ‘No we don’t like it, we want to see if we can add more money to the budget’.
“So, they managed to speak to the dad of the guy, and they did manage to find more money.
“I’ll never forget it. Our assistant producer, she was up with an estate agent till four o’clock that morning.”
Scarlette said: “I’d already gone to bed about one as I was like, ‘Guys, I’ve got to get to bed’ and we were just looking everywhere.
“But she managed to find a property that we saw as property number four, and then that was the one the couple ended up buying.”
During the latest series, Scarlette was shut down by one couple who decided to halt a property viewing early.
In one episode, Scarlette was tasked with finding a holiday home for Karen and Paul but the couple proved difficult to please.
The property expert focussed the search on Spain’s Mijas Costa and was left mortified when the couple brought the final viewing to a halt before they’d had the chance to see the entire property.
When the host showed Karen and Paul the fifth property, things got off to a disappointing start.
Karen felt the property was small and dark and so was instantly put off, whereas Paul was so blown away by property four that he didn’t want to view any more holiday homes.
A Place in the Sun airs weekdays at 4pm on Channel 4.
