Michael van Gerwen has advised Mervyn King to focus on his own game after the Englishman was visibly annoyed by the Dutchman during Sunday night’s classic Players Championship Finals contest.
Van Gerwen beat King 11-10 in an epic final at the Ricoh Arena, Coventry, with the world number one seemingly back to something like his best, averaging over 104 in the match.
It was an engaging clash, not just thanks to the quality, but also due to the feisty relationship the two players have and King’s obvious irritation over how Van Gerwen acts on stage.
Mighty Mike tends to celebrate important finishes with a shout and a pump of the arms, not something out of the ordinary in the modern game, but King is not a fan at all.
The veteran even went to celebrate in a similar way after a superb checkout on the bullseye, but stopped himself at the last second.
King was even looking on at Van Gerwen quizzically after the Dutchman had hit the winning double, shaken his hand and then went on to celebrate further.
The world number one has suggested that King tries not to get so annoyed by what his opponent is doing and just concentrate on his own game.
‘Mervyn doesn’t enjoy a lot,’ Van Gerwen told ITV when asked about King’s reactions.
‘Of course, if people keep complaining…we’re all here to do a job, try to win the game with a good performance.
‘The way he keeps making excuses, what Mervyn is like, we all know that, that’s not nice, it doesn’t do the game any favours.’
