Christian Eriksen was all smiles as he posed at the beach with a young fan in his first public picture since being discharged from hospital a month ago following his cardiac arrest.

The Denmark midfielder, 29, suffered a life-threatening cardiac arrest on the pitch during his side’s 1-0 defeat against Finland in their opening Euro 2020 match and had to be resuscitated before being taken to Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen.

The Danish FA confirmed back on June 18 that Eriksen had underwent a successful operation to have a a cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) implanted before he was discharged from hospital.

Eriksen, who has not posted anything on social media since uploading a picture of himself from his hospital bed two-and-a-half weeks ago, has been recovering in the city of Odense but was pictured with a young fan at Tisvilde Strand beach on Friday.

Bjorn Bindzus, who posted a selfie with Eriksen on Instagram, told Danish newspaper BT: ‘I was nervous and completely speechless when I had to ask about the picture. But I’m proud that I did it and I’m very happy today.

The Denmark midfielder posted this picture of himself in his hospital bed shortly after he collapsed last month

‘We were at a photoshoot for a commercial when I suddenly saw him while we were having lunch. So I waited to ask him until he had finished talking to his girlfriend. And he said yes right away.

‘I didn’t see the incident against Finland, but he looked healthy. It was really nice to see.

‘I mostly watch football when the national team is playing, and here my favourite player is without a doubt Christian Eriksen. I’m proud of myself that I have that image.’

Eriksen has also been to see his Denmark team-mates, who on Saturday booked their place in the semi-final of Euro 2020 by beating Czech Republic 2-1, since returning home.

Kasper Schmeichel said seeing Eriksen helped the Danish players to eradicate the horrible memories from that afternoon against Finland in Copenhagen.

‘It was great to see him,’ Schmeichel said. ‘That helped a lot of the guys I think just to see him and erase the last image we had of him on the pitch.

‘To see him in real life and to see that he was okay…it was really important.’

Denmark, who famously won the Euros in 1992 despite not even qualifying for the tournament, now have another fairytale triumph in their sights after progressing to the last four.

Manager Kasper Hjulmand admitted last week that Denmark fans’ incredible support for Eriksen has given the side ‘wings’ and is inspiring them to go all the way.

‘When Christian collapsed, everything changed for me’, Hjulmand said after their victory over Wales. ‘It was suddenly a totally different situation.

‘We needed the love and the support and that gave us wings.

‘It’s hard to believe that this is reality. I am really grateful for all the Danes who came here. It’s crazy. I am very, very grateful.

‘I admire the boys. Everything wasn’t perfect during the game, but we improved. The guys are true warriors.’
