Athletes have been told they can snitch their rivals and get them thrown out of the Olympics for breaking Covid rules.
The International Olympic Committee have published new regulations which states that ‘any person’ may inform them of an alleged infringement of the Games playbook by a competitor, which would then trigger a disciplinary process.
Infringements include failing to wear a mask when required, not abiding by social distancing measures and refusing to take a coronavirus test.
Athletes can now report their on their rivals and get them thrown out of the Tokyo Olympics if they are found to have broken any of the coronavirus protocols put in place by the IOC
Rule-breakers face a preliminary inquiry and then a possible disciplinary hearing, which could lead to fines, disqualification, being stripped of medals, exclusion from the Games or even deportation from Japan.
The IOC disciplinary regulations raises the prospect of athletes reporting opponents before they face they each other should they spot them walking around the Olympic Village without a mask or hugging a team-mate.
Pierre Ducrey, the IOC’s Olympic Games operations director, warned: ‘We expect you to play by the rules, but if you don’t, there will be sanctions that could be coming your way.’
