ARSENAL could have signed Jadon Sancho, Arsene Wenger has revealed.
Sancho left Manchester City as a teenager despite being offered a record-breaking £35,000 a week by the club to stay at their academy.
Instead he went to Borussia Dortmund where he became one of Europe's most sought after players – but ex-Arsenal boss Wenger says his life could have been very different.
Speaking on beIN Sports: “I wanted to take him from Man City when he didn't get the games.
“I tried to lure him because he's from London. I tried to get him to Arsenal. He's one of the best players of his generation. He can dribble, he has the arrogance.
“There's something in there that is part of the big players. You can call it arrogance, confidence, belief; but it has to be there.”
NABIL FEKIR was linked with almost every club in England but Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea emerged as the leading contenders in the summer of 2018.
Fekir was within a few hours of signing for Liverpool but the deal fell through – and now the then-Lyon star has spoken out about why.
Stories emerged that the Reds had concerns about his knee and Arsenal and Chelsea appeared to abandon their interest after that reservation too.
But Fekir has refuted that injury or off-field issues blocked the transfer.
Fekir told French newspaper L'Equipe: “It’s a lie […] Lots of lies were told and they affected me, especially those told about my family.
“It hurt them and me, especially when you know that what’s being told is false.
“You want the truth? Even I don’t know, I promise you!
“I did my medical and then [Liverpool] decided not to sign me.
“At some point they wanted to have me believe it was because of my knee, but an excuse needed to be found.”
GRANIT XHAKA looks set to miss some time for Arsenal after revealing an injury problem while on international duty.
Xhaka has started three times for Arsenal this season in the Premier League but has been criticised for his performances at times.
However, it now seems he has been carrying a problem that might have been hampering his ability.
Xhaka said: “I’ve been suffering from Achilles tendon pain for a few weeks now. I felt it during the game.
“It hurts now, but it should be okay otherwise.”
Xhaka also wants to take some time away from football when he becomes a father for the first time – his wife is due to give birth next month.
PIERRE-EMERICK AUBAMEYANG has been slated for wrapping his £2million LaFerrari in chrome.
The Arsenal forward left his pride and joy in the trusty hands of celebrity car customiser Yianni Charalambous for a makeover.
Car customer Yianni admitted the 30-year-old's colour change from red to chrome would divide the opinions of his followers.
He said: “This is going to be a massive love and hate.”
But Aubameyang hit back: “Hate me or love me… We don't give a f***.”
We leave you to make your own mind up…
PER MERTESACKER has a book out and he has been telling some home truths about Arsenal – and about football pundits.
Mertesacker, who now runs Arsenal's academy, joined the Gunners from Werder Bremen back in 2011.
And it appears that one commentator hadn't done his homework on the Germany international.
Mertesacker said: “Some fans had probably been wishing for another Tony Adams [when I signed].
“My name likely meant little to them.
“Robbie Savage wasn’t thrilled. He said: ‘I don’t rate Mertesacker at all, he wasn’t convincing at Real Madrid’.
“Savage had confused me with Christoph Metzelder.”
