Why Did Kanye West Share a Video Peeing on 1 of His Grammy Trophies?

Kanye West tweeted a video of himself urinating on one of his Grammy statuettes, and fans have many questions. Is that an authentic Grammy? Why did he urinate on the trophy? Why did he tweet over 100 times in one hour on Sept. 16?

Kanye West tweeted images of his recording contracts

Although peeing on one of his Grammys is pretty strange, that wasn’t the most shocking thing that West did on Wednesday. First, he shared a series of photos of his Universal Recording contracts. He told fans that the PDFs would not upload to Twitter, so instead, he took pictures of them. Then he shared images of 10 documents, including his recording agreement.

“Here are my 10 Universal contracts,” West tweeted before uploading the images of the documents. “I need every lawyer in the world to look at these.”

He also asked for fellow musicians to help him by retweeting.

“Bono, can I get a retweet?” the rapper asked. “Love you, Paul. Can I get a retweet? Love you, Drake, Kendrick, even Taylor. We need you right, noooooow.”

He also shared several Bible verses and tweets demanding that the music industry simplify their overly complicated contracts.

Why did Kanye West pee on his Grammy?

After West shared the contracts, he uploaded a video of himself giving a golden shower to one of his 21 Grammys. Various news outlets are reporting that it is a real Grammy statue.

“Trust me,” the rapper tweeted with the video. “I WON’T STOP.”

West rained on his trophy to demonstrate that he is not going to stop fighting for the rights to his music. He refers to the industry as “modern-day slavery.” The star would like to own the masters to his songs and see “Black ownership in enterprise,” according to TMZ.

“90% of the record contracts on the planet are still on a royalty,” West tweeted following the video. “A standard record deal is a trap to NEVER have you recoup, and there’s all these hidden costs like the ‘distribution fees’ many labels put in their contracts to make even more money off our work without even trying.”

How do fans feel about Kanye West’s push for ownership of his masters?

While fans were confused about the video, they do have opinions on Kanye’s requests.

“Kanye West isn’t easing up off his push for Black ownership in music,” Revolt TV tweeted. “This we can get behind.”

Some fans agree that it is time for musicians to own the original masters of their songs. However, others ask why the singers and songwriters signed the contracts in the first place.

“Wild approach, but he makes a lot of valid points,” one user replied to Revolt TV’s tweet.

Only time will tell if West’s actions amount to real change in the music industry.
