Whirlpool has issued a plea to up to 800,000 owners of dodgy tumble dryers to “make contact immediately”.
The firm has become so worried that its vice president, Jeff Noel, issued an alert saying it was “vital” owners of affected machines got in touch before they caught fire.
He said: “Please contact us immediately if you still own one and haven’t had it modified or replaced by us.”
The Office for Product Safety and Standards issued a recall notice 12 days ago on some models of Hotpoint, Indesit, Creda, Swan and Proline dryers built from 2004 to 2015.
Owners can check if they are affected on 0800 151 0905 or by clicking here .
Anyone with an affected dryer should unplug it at once and stop using it.
Caroline Normand, of consumer group Which?, said: “Hundreds of thousands of fire risk dryers could still be in people’s homes, four years after this fault was discovered.”
As the Mirror recently reported , under the recall, consumers with an unmodified, affected tumble dryer will be entitled to a new replacement machine, the Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) has announced.
This will be delivered and installed, with the old one removed, all at no cost.
It comes nearly four years after issues about the product were first raised.
