Let’s face it, most of us don’t have the willpower or inclination to get our homes looking like Marie Kondo’s.
And with reports suggesting that Brits spent £40 billion on items to cheer themselves up during lockdown, we’re adding to our piles and drawers of ‘stuff’.
If you – like a lot of us – have drawers filled with random bits, or a pantry with tins that’ve seen better days, it’s probably time to declutter.
This can be a difficult task, but it’s a lot easier if you start with things you have too much of or have been hoarding.
Tombola has teamed up with leading astrologers Inbaal Honigman and Emily Anne Thornton, who have used the stars to decipher what each zodiac sign should streamline.
From clothes to gadgets, here’s what the stars say you should declutter.
Aquarius – Jan 20 to Feb 18
Astrologer and Mystic, Inbaal Honigman, states that those who were born under the Aquarius sign have ‘a love of clear, open spaces, so an Aquarians home looks tidy at first glance. Open the cupboards, however, for a different tale.’
Aquarians keep a lot of their feelings inside, and this can also translate to their organisation. Head to the hidden parts of your home and scale back – mostly just avoid stuffing any bits and bobs into further hideaways.
Pisces – Feb 19 to March 20
Photos and childhood items
Astrologer and Tarot Reader, Emily Anne Thornton says: ‘Hold onto things that mean a lot to you. You don’t need to get rid of everything. Just be wiser with storage.’
Because Pisceans can be sensitive and sentimental, so Inbaal recommends digitising photos or keepsakes, and keeping one or two to physically display in pride of place.
Aries – Mar 21 to Apr 19
Small jobs, bags, and coats
Inbaal says that Aries are ‘never indoors long enough to make a decision whether to keep or chuck an item.’
She advses: ‘Start small – do the bedside area, then the gym clothes. You’ll need to commit to a small job daily.’
As the young’un of the zodiac (the first sign) you might struggle to be tied down, so choose to declutter places you use the most, or as Emily advises, clear out pockets and bags first.
Taurus – Apr 20 – May 20
Books and skincare
Taureans are lovers of self-care. Emily suggests that there could be ‘too many bottles of unused products in the bathroom cupboard. And they should plan a specific routine.’
Inbaal adds: ‘Your love for learning means that every space is covered in books. Even your books are covered in books. So tackle those.’
Gemini – May 21 to Jun 20
Emily says that a Gemini ‘can’t bear to let any information go. You may have oversubscribed. Cancel the ones you don’t get around to reading.’
Thankfully, most Geminis will be fairly on the ball when it comes to clutter, with their quick-thinking and acting nature meaning mess doesn’t stick around for long.
Cancer – Jun 21 to Jul 21
Inbaal says Cancers are ‘born cooks, and your kitchen is blessed with all the newest trends and dishes. Box up the older, ordinary cookware, and donate.’
Cancer is potentially the biggest homebody in the zodiac, so thinking of a clear-out as a way to make the space nicer for themselves and their family will spur them on.
Leo – Jul 23 to Aug 22
Inbaal says: ‘Even though regal Leos love living in stylish, uncluttered spaces, they enjoy having memories of days gone by. A box in the loft is where they belong, so get sorting.’
The stereotype of a Leo is that they’re showy, and this can be true. While image is important, though, they should be careful to avoid buying more than they need.
Virgo – Aug 23 to Sep 22
Receipts and letters
Emily says: ‘Virgos keep a log of everything, but do we really need that receipt for Primark from 2016? You’re great at tax returns, however, keep it all in one place and clear it out after the year is up.’
To avoid Virgo’s organisational prowess being their downfall, they should invest in a sturdy folder to hold on to their documents (within reason).
Libra – Sep 23 to Oct 22
According to Inbaal ‘your wardrobe needs some serious TLC.’
Libras are stylish, but that can translate into keeping too many old or ill-fitting garments. Pieces that simply don’t work as part of your aesthetic should go, and sentimental items can be stored.
Scorpio – Oct 23 to Nov 21
‘Your tech drawer is overflowing and could use some sensible clutter-busting,’ says Inbaal.
‘Scorpios love the latest gadgets, so all your old earbuds, chargers and batteries are taking up much needed space.’
Be ruthless here, and remember to recycle or pass on anything you can.
Sagittarius – Nov 22 to Dec 21
Souvenirs and travel books
Emily says: ‘Sagittarians have serious wanderlust, but how about moving the books on and getting a kindle to store your travel guides.’
Inbaal adds that you might also be keeping souvenirs and keepsakes from holidays gone by, and while you don’t need to get rid of them all, ‘hold on to memories, not knick-knacks.’
Capricorn – Dec 22 to Jan 19
For Capricorns, Inbaal says ‘that workspace at home needs tackling pronto. You keep every last bit of paper.’
Ambitious and organised Cap like to have logs of their spending, but unless you need those items, it’s time to get rid.
