“Weird Al” Yankovic just saved 2020.
The comedic singer revealed that he recently reconnected with his ninth-grade crush — who saved a portrait he had sketched nearly 50 years ago.
Last week on Facebook, the 61-year-old performer recalled that he nursed a crush on a girl named Patrice who sat in front of him in a ninth-grade maths class.
Yankovic explained he was “pretty awkward, shy and nerdy” and wouldn’t have dreamed on acting on his crush.
“But one day I decided I would make my big move – I decided to draw a picture of her and present her with it,” he wrote. “But because I didn’t want to give her the impression that I LIKED her or anything, I also drew pictures of EVERY SINGLE PERSON IN THE CLASS and handed those out as well, just to throw her off the scent.”
Although he does admit he sketched Patrice’s picture “just a little bit better” as a “subtle” hint toward his feelings.
Fast forward nearly half a century later and Yankovic sees that a woman has been reminiscing on his Twitter feed about sitting in front of the comedian during ninth-grade math.
He reached out and asked if she was indeed Patrice and if she remembered the portrait he had sketched.
Within a minute Patrice sent a screenshot of the portrait which she had kept.
“She had saved it all these years,” he wrote. “I just felt like telling this story because, well….2020 was arguably a pretty sucky year overall, but there were some real moments of joy sprinkled in here and there – and for me, this was definitely one of them.”
