A woman pulled into prostitution from watching Pretty Woman says the reality was far darker than the film.

Annie Lobert, who these days runs sex worker outreach group Hookers For Jesus, romped for cash almost every day from 1987 to 1998.

But she was always hoping to meet someone that would take her away from the trap of prostitution and give her a glamorous life.

Annie told podcaster Peter Santenello that she would earn up to $5,000 for sex, but all of it would go to the man who trafficked her.

Sometimes she wouldn’t even have sex with the men. “Sometimes you just take your clothes off and then you run out the room,” she recalled.

“If the guy that's buying doesn't have enough money to do everything you don't have to give him everything if you don't want to. You just run…”

Other times, she’d get her clients to take her shopping like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman.

She continued: “I'd say, 'Oh, I want to go to Tiffany and get a diamond ring…oh, I want a Louis Vuitton, I want a Chanel purse…'

"All the call girls, [The movie Pretty Woman] that's our fantasy.

    • 'Mum said no one would fancy me if I was fat – but I earn £385 per hour as escort'

“I saw it with my trafficker when it first came out. As I was walking out of the theatre, we were in Hollywood at the time, I was bawling my eyes out.

“He said. "What the f*** are you crying about, b****?” I said "What did you just say to me?"

"He's like, 'You fake b****, what are you crying about?'

“I go, 'You don't get it do you? That's what I want. I want that. That's who I want in my life'.

"And he said: 'Well, you ain't getting that with me, b****, I'm a pimp'."

At first, she thought prostitution was easy, and was seduced by what she saw as a glamorous lifestyle.

“I turned my first trick on the Waikiki beach with a Japanese man and I didn't have to have any sex," she recalled.

“All I did is take my clothes off and the guy freaked out, he kind of lost it.

"It was less than three minutes and I just walked out and I thought, ‘Who would not do this for a living?’ Who would not get $500 or $1,000, $2,000 just to take their clothes off?”

But the dream soon turned sour. Annie had horrific beatings from her pimp when she tried to get away from him, and being ritually humiliated as an example to the other girls.

    • 'I earn $1k a day as prostitute – I'm saving for son's future but constant sex is hard'

“When you leave you get beat down, hunted down, they send their handlers to find you.," she explained. "And you get kidnapped, which happened to me.

“I got all my hair cut off in front of six pimps. And they brought their girls to this…’checking’ of me, they call it. My ex-trafficker made me take all my clothes off, my pimp, and he said, 'Bend your head down.'.

"Then he had a gun to my head like this. And so I bend my head down and I heard the razor turn on. And he shaved all my hair off. Because he knew that my hair was my money, it was part of my look.

“And then he took the poker from the fireplace and he just went ‘boom’ on my leg. The muscle got completely killed.”

    • Mum sold daughter, 3, to be 'raped and murdered for £10 worth of drugs'

But still, Annie says, the secret world of sex work can seem very glamorous.

She continued: “Such an underground world… it was so taboo and so attractive. It just drew me in like the Twilight Zone.

“To be honest with you, on my flesh, and my wants and needs of the human body as a female, it’s very attractive to me because I can meet a very wealthy man. I can meet a good looking man.

“I can find a man that can take care of me and my family for the rest of my life and I'll be happy. And that's our idea and fantasy when we sell ourselves when we get into the business."

But that’s “absolutely” the Pretty Woman fantasy, Annie says.
