  • Adam Smith, 40, and Gemma Burke, 37, from Wales, were takeaway addicts
  • Couple would spend up to £75 a day on unhealthy habit and packed on pounds
  • Size 22 Gemma was a yo-yo dieter who struggled to keep the weight off
  • 27st 7lb Adam was given a death sentence by doctors if he didn’t lose the weight
  • Ended up having weight loss surgery and lost a combined 20st 5lbs

A couple have revealed they dropped over 20st together after ditching their £75 daily takeaway addiction.

Adam Smith, 40, and Gemma Burke, 37, from Port Talbot, piled on the pounds after adopting a diet of takeaways and fast food – from large pizzas to Chinese curries with extra sides.

Size 22 Gemma was a yo-yo dieter who struggled to keep the weight off, while 27st 7lb Adam was given a death sentence by doctors if he didn’t lose the weight fast.

But after deciding to stop their unhealthy ways, the couple decided to undergo £6,000 weight loss surgery in Istanbul, Turkey and lost 20st 5lbs between them.

Gemma, who works in management support said their relationship has massively improved, adding: ‘I am much more confident now – especially in the bedroom as I used to cover up. But now I don’t feel so shy!’

But after deciding to stop their unhealthy ways, the couple decided to both undergo £6,000 weight loss surgery in Istanbul, Turkey and lost 20st 5lbs between them

Adam explained: ‘At 37, the doctor gave me ten years to live. The news horrified me as I didn’t want to eat myself to death.

‘But I knew, the only way I’d be able to maintain the weight loss was through surgery.

‘I had terrible sleep apnoea before and required an oxygen mask at night.’

He continued: ‘I could barely walk without getting out of breath and my knees were going.’

Gemma, who was a yo-yo dieter having long struggled with her weight, decided to tackle the problem after she ballooned to a size 22

The couple would order takeaways almost every day, with their meals sometimes costing £75 each day (left, and right, Gemma before)

Gemma said her size-22 figure caused her to lose confidence in the bedroom, and revealed she would often ‘cover up’

WHAT IS BARIATRIC SURGERY?

Bariatric surgery is a variety of procedures designed to help a patient lose weight.

Surgeries include reducing the size of the stomach with a gastric band, or removing part of the stomach through a gastric sleeve.

It also includes gastric bypass surgery, in which surgeons reroute the intestine to a small stomach pouch which shrinks the stomach.

He said: ‘Fast food was the easy option.

‘Gemma and I would often feel tired after work so a take-away was the quicker option.

‘We’d easily spend about £40 per day as we would have a lot of sides.

‘A typical order from the Chinese would be prawn toast, chicken balls, keema rice, spicy chips, crispy beef, BBQ ribs, special curry, satay chicken and special chow mein.

‘A Dominos order would easily be over £75. But we would only order from there when we could save a bit of money with a 30 per cent discount.’

Adam had had a mini gastric bypass – a long stomach pouch was created and divided the rest of her stomach – in in July 2018.

Two months after the surgery, Adam returned his oxygen tank.

He said: ‘Gemma was impressed with how well the gastric band had worked for me so I treated her to one too.

‘We flew out to Turkey together and had a nice little holiday before transforming our bodies for the better.’

Gemma had the same procedure at the same hospital in October 2019.

The couple would often get takeaways because they felt they were an ‘easy option’ after a difficult day at work

27st 7lb Adam was given a death sentence by doctors if he didn’t lose the weight fast and decided to go under the knife

Adam travelled to Turkey for the weight loss surgery, which he says has completely transformed his life (pictured, in hospital in July 2018)

Within one year, he lost 16 stone but the excess skin around his stomach and back was a ‘daily reminder’ of his obesity.

Typical takeaway order

Large pizzas x 2 £19.99 each

Chicken wings x 2 – £5.99 each

chicken strips x 2 – £5.99

cookies x2 – £4.99

Ben and Jerry’s ice cream – £5.99

A bottle of coca-cola – £2.49

TOTAL – £82.37

He said: ‘The excess skin was worse than the fat. It used to clap when I jogged and it was quite embarrassing.

‘I knew I had to get rid of it to be truly happy.’

Adam returned to Irmet International hospital with Gemma to have 4kg of excess skin removed, forking out an extra £5,500 for excess skin removal.

The couple insists the surgery – which costs £3000 each – is the ‘best thing’ they’d ever done. Adam wished he had done it sooner.

Gemma, who now weighs 13st 9lbs, said: ‘It was nice to be able to support one another.

‘We both understand what we are going through and how it feels.

‘I couldn’t have gone through with the surgery if it wasn’t for Adam as I was quite nervous.’

Adam has not only seen health benefits but financial ones too. They now save approximately £1,120 per month after ditching takeaways.

He explained: ‘I wouldn’t dream of doing that now.

After seeing her boyfriend’s remarkable weight loss progress, Gemma also went under the knife in October 2019 (pictured)

The couple then returned to Turkey within a year to have Adam’s excess skin removed after he lost 16 stone

Adam said his excess skin was a ‘daily reminder’ of his obesity and revealed he felt embarrassed because the skin ‘clapped’ when he was running

Adam returned to the hospital in Turkey and forked out an extra £5,500 for excess skin removal (left, and right, after the operation)

‘I now little and often. It’s usually 300 calories wraps throughout the day following by fish and vegetables for dinner.’

‘We have stopped eating fast food and started cooking together. We may have one takeaway per month which we can’t even finish.’

‘Previously, I’d have chicken curry with rice from the Chinese and Adam would have two.

‘Now, we have one between us and still have leftovers. We are much healthier now and full of energy.’

Gemma, who now weighs 12st 3lbs, said her confidence had increased ‘massively’ since the weight loss surgery

She said the couple now have plenty of energy and have swapped their takeaway habits for exercise and long walks
