My wife gives in to everything our daughter wants and it’s just not right – The Sun

DEAR DEIDRE: OUR daughter wraps my wife round her little finger and knows just how to press her buttons.

I am 37, my wife is 36 and our daughter is 11. She has just started secondary school.

My wife worries how she is getting on in a bigger school, which is natural enough, but she dotes on her and gives her whatever she wants – treats, trips to burger bars, sweets, fizzy drinks and biscuits.

Our daughter is putting on a lot of weight and I am worried about her. All she does in her spare time is watch TV and play girlie games on her tablet.

When I have suggested restricting this, my wife tells me to leave her alone, that she will deal with it – but she doesn’t. I now have no say in our daughter’s upbringing. When I try to talk to my wife about it she simply says I should be a bit more understanding.

DEIDRE SAYS: Maybe you sound more aggressive than you realise when you talk to your daughter.

But lack of boundaries is damaging for children and what’s happening is not good for your daughter’s physical health either. She needs you two to decide on a united front.

Tell your wife that your daughter is heading for health problems.

Promise to listen to her if in turn she will take on board some of your suggestions, and then talk to your daughter together about the new regime.
