My grandson is aimless after Covid with no school and no career

DEAR DEIDRE: HOW can I help my aimless 18-year-old grandson find a job?

Like lots of young people, his education was badly affected by the pandemic. All the careers advice stopped too.

Now he’s left school. Although he used to get good marks in exams, he has lost his focus and ambition.

Now he spends all day playing computer games and watching videos.

He doesn’t know what he wants to do and if I try to talk to him about it, he gets annoyed and upset.

I fear he’ll end up drifting through life or getting into trouble.

I want him to get help before it’s too late but I’m a 62-year-old gran and know nothing about the world of work these days.

DEIDRE SAYS: Covid has been particularly hard on young adults.
He might be depressed.

If you think so, encourage him to contact The Mix (themix.org.uk, 0808 808 4994), a free service that gives emotional support to young people.

My support pack on Finding Work could help him.

Longer-term, he can get advice from the National Careers Service (nationalcareersservice.direct.gov.uk, 0800 100 900).
