A mum has accused Matalan of whitening the skin of a mixed race character on a pair of £10 children’s pyjamas.
Nekeshia Bentley’s daughter Nyemah, five, loves Nickelodeon character Nella the Princess Knight so thought of her when she spotted the cute outfit.
But she quickly spotted something slightly off, and she believes the company has whitened her skin.
Nekeshia, who lives in Reading, is outraged and believes it’s either a "massive mistake or a case of sub-conscious racism".
The 29-year-old mum said: "Either way it is out of order.
"My daughter loves Nella. She watches the show all the time and pretends to be Nella, trying to do everything she does. She has toys of all ethnicities but she gravitates towards toys that look like her.
"She is a good, strong model. I’ve no idea why Matalan whitened the character – they need to explain.
"I thought it may have been the way it looked on the website, but it was the same in the shop — she looked white.
The pyjamas are available in store and on the company’s website.
Nickelodeon character Nella, who has a black dad and a white mum, spends her time saves people who live in her parents’ kingdom by turning into the Princess Knight whenever there is trouble.
She goes on quests and solves mysteries with her pals, learning valuable life lessons along the way.
The pyjamas, which also feature her talking unicorn Trinket, show her holding up her sword proudly.
Mirror Online has contacted Matalan for comment.
