Meghan Markle close to tears in behind-the-scenes video of ‘secret project’

Video footage has been released for the first time that shows Meghan Markle close to tears by the praise she received for becoming the  guest editor for British Vogue's September issue.

The two minute behind-the-scenes clip shows The Duchess of Sussex and the publication's editor-in-chief Edward Enninful talking about how they worked together before they phone a number of women who were involved in the project.

The royal  was the first person to edit the iconic September issue, which focused on female changemakers and was titled 'Forces for Change' it included a shoot with Meghan pictured at the  workroom of charity Smart Works, of which she is the royal patron of.

It had a front cover featuring the faces of 15 female and majority non-white activists and politicians along with one small reflective mirrored panel for a reader's face.

Meghan had been heavily involved in choosing women across fashion, film, tech and beyond to feature including actress Yara Shahidi, model Adwoa Aboah, climate change campaigner Greta Thunberg, activist and actor Jane Fonda, LGBTQIA+ advocate and actor Laverne Cox.

In the video Meghan calls Jane Fonda whose words leave her visibly moved.

Jane says: "Meghan, I'm so proud of you for using your amazing platform and your strong voice, and I'm so honoured to be a part of it with all those other amazing women.

"Thank you so much for including me."

Meghan looks down and appears to be close to tears after the call.

The footage was posted on The Duke and Duchess' Instagram account on Thursday evening to celebrate the edition being not only the biggest selling issue of the past decade but also the fastest selling in the fashion bible's history.

The post says: "Earlier today  @edward_enninful, the Editor in Chief of  @britishvogue shared: “ #ForcesForChange, guest edited by The Duchess of Sussex  @SussexRoyal, was our fastest-selling issue in the history of  #BritishVogue ( sold out in 10 days) and the biggest-selling issue of the past decade. I can't wait to see what 2020 has in store…”

"To celebrate, we wanted to share this never before seen video behind the scenes with Edward and The Duchess of Sussex on the creation of this special issue. Please note, this was filmed last August in London."

At the beginning of the video Edward said: "We had to keep this quiet for a very long time.

"I remember walking into Kensington Palace and I was so excited.

After agreeing to Meghan guest editing the issue the pair embarked on an almost nine months of secretive planning.

Working with skeleton staff, even most Vogue staff were kept in the dark about who the star editor was.

Edward said: "You have an editor's eye. I mean I've never seen anything like it.

"You were so thorough from beginning to end."

Meghan laughs: "But I left the fashion stuff to you professionals."

Praising Meghan effusively, Edward said: "You wanted to focus on women who are changing the world, women who are doing incredible things. Which is really is in line with what we do at British Vogue."

Megan replies: "Yes, and then having the mirror – anyone, no matter who they are, picking up this issue, should be able to see themself in it, and that's what i feel really proud that we've accomplished."

In the clip the pair also call Laverne Cox, Sinead Burke, Francesca Hayward, Yara Shahidi and Adwoa Aboah who says "What a f***ing great project."
