Margot Robbie has clearly grown to admire the real-life woman she plays in her upcoming movie.
The “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” actress, 28, paid homage to Sharon Tate, whom she plays in the film, while out at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival. Robbie wore a simple white Chanel dress with feminine ruffle details and pulled the front of her blonde hair into four braids — two on each side of her face.
While the look definitely seemed inspired by retro style, writer Evan Ross Katz pointed out that it was the exact hairstyle Tate wore to the very same festival in 1968, just one year before she was murdered by followers of Charles Manson.
Before the premiere of the widely-praised movie at Cannes, Robbie took a dive into the waters at Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc. She later hit the red carpet with her co-stars wearing a Chanel tunic and matching sequin pants.
Tate’s sister, Debra, was on set with Robbie and the rest of the cast during filming, and while she has voiced her disapproval of the movie, she appears to be a fan of the Australian star.
“Margot is an extremely dedicated craftsman,” she told TMZ in August 2018. “She’s a very dedicated actress. And yes, of course, she had lots of questions about Sharon and her take on Sharon and I’m very confident she’s going to give us everything we need.” Debra also said that Robbie had done a lot of research before even speaking with her.
The Quentin Tarantino-directed film also stars Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio and opens in theaters July 26.
