Lupita Nyong’o is the only good part about ‘Little Monsters’

The zombie genre may be shambling on long past its expiration date, but there’s still always room for another good zom-com.

Unfortunately, “Little Monsters” doesn’t have too many ideas beyond casting Lupita Nyong’o as an undead-slaying and ukulele-playing kindergarten teacher.

Who knows why the Oscar-winning talent agreed to do this Aussie indie, but her relentlessly cheerful, blood-soaked performance is by far the best thing about this story of a slacker musician (Alexander England), a sleazy kids’ show host (Josh Gad) and a classroom of tots trapped at a petting zoo during a zombie apocalypse.

Director-writer Abe Forsythe (“Down Under”) nails a handful of funny juxtapositions, but too often leans into mean-spirited and tired yuks. As far as red flags for lameness go, fat-kid and pooping your pants jokes are, well, dead giveaways.
