Whilst many of us are still recovering from an unusually warm and sunny August, some people have begun to look to the months ahead. In fact, you might be surprised to hear that John Lewis has already released its top 10 toys for Christmas 2022 – several of which you can buy now, ready for the festive season.

Whilst this might seem premature, given that it is only August, it isn’t uncommon. Retailers often use this technique – known as “Christmas creep” – in which they start promoting winter-themed merchandise earlier every year. For instance, John Lewis has festive-themed decor already available for purchase in-store. The chain currently has almost 30 individual baubles and 11 types of fake festive furs for sale on its website.

Tesco also released an advert back in July, advising customers to start thinking about their festive shopping to help spread the cost out. This isn’t a surprise, given the Bank of England’s recent warning that “the United Kingdom is now projected to enter recession” just before the Christmas holidays. As a result, people are being encouraged to plan ahead, buy items when they can afford them, and stash them away.

In fact, a recent study by Continuous product design specialist, Quantum Metric, found that almost three in 10 (30 per cent) are already buying items ahead of the festive season. Also, a majority said they will spend less than £500 this year, as a result of the “strain of the cost-of-living crisis”.

Commenting on the top picks for toys this year, Alan Wright, chief toy buyer at John Lewis, said: “It’s always such fun to see toys that brought so much joy decades ago come back around.”
