The way an avocado is stored will vary according to the ripeness of each fruit, but certain storage methods have proven game-changing for prolonging shelf life.
According to culinary scientist chef Jessica Gavin, there are several ways an avocado can be stored so that it doesn’t discolour too soon, starting with the use of cooking oils.
Several of Gavin’s methods were discussed in a clip posted from the cook’s TikTok account, where she shares useful lifestyle hacks with an army of 20,000 followers.
“Don’t let unused avocado go to waste,” the content creator declared at the beginning of her clip. “Here are four ways to keep it fresh and green.”
Though cut avocado should always be stored in the fridge to stop it from spoiling, adding a thin layer of oil to the exposed side of the fruit could prolong it further, Gavin explained in her video.
The cook recommends using a “neutral-tasting oil on the surface,” which creates a “lipid barrier so that oxygen cannot interact with open fruit”.
Another method is to run the cut side of the fruit under running tap water, which should contain enough chlorine to preserve the fruit in its freshest state.
Though chlorine is a chemical element, it is considered perfectly safe to drink at the low levels used in drinking water in the United Kingdom and the United States.
Next, the content creator advises squeezing lemon juice evenly on the exposed side fruit, which contains potent antioxidants “to reduce browning”, Gavin explained.
The content creator did point out, however, too much lemon could cause the fruit to go mushy, so it is best to limit the amount to just a few drops.
Last but not least, the content creator declared that the quickest way of all to prevent avocado browning involves placing the half-cut avocado facing down, onto a piece of tin foil.
“Then wrap it up tight,” she instructs. “This creates a physical barrier so that no oxygen can come through.
“No matter what method you choose you can refrigerate for one to two days,” concludes the content creator.
