How advent calendars can cost FOUR times more than their contents

The great Advent calendar rip off: Shoppers are paying up to FOUR times more than the contents are worth for trendy foodie offerings containing booze and cheese

  • Gin Explorers Advent Calendar has  £36 worth of gin, sell for a huge £100
  • Likewise, Jack Daniels charges £80 for £47 worth of their tipple in their calendar
  • Twinings also double their cost, selling £12.28 worth of tea for a whopping £25

As the nights get colder, and the days get darker, the one saving grace of the winter months is the countdown to Christmas.

December is often marked by the opening of advent calendars, which traditionally used just pictures, before the use of chocolate became popular item and children and adults alike started enjoying 24 sweet treats hidden behind festive doors.

But in recent years, the advent calendar craze has soared, with all kinds of goods being used – Boots No. 7 Calendar, for example, sold out in minutes.

And while beauty advent calendars seem to be a bargain across the board, how do their boozy and foodie counterparts compare?

From 24 tipples of gin throughout December to a daily bite of cheese and even a marshmallow for roasting, Femail looks at the most overpriced and the best bargain advent calendars.
