A gran who has gained a masters’ degree aged 82 said she refuses to “sit around and get ill” in retirement.
And Hilary Forde-Chalkly’s husband Syd, 79, has urged “get off your backside” as he has returned to work as a delivery driver.
When Hilary declared she was “bored to tears” the pair, encouraged by their three children and two grandchildren, set about a dramatic life change.
Some 67 years after she left school with one O-level, Hilary got a creative writing masters from Kingston University, South West London, while Syd drives all over the country.
Now she has written two books in a romantic trilogy and hopes for a publisher.
Hilary, from Berkhamstead, Herts, who worked in a tool hire firm, said: “There are two sets of retired people – one lot just sit around and get ill and the others get out and achieve things.”
Syd added: “Anybody sitting on a settee, get off your backside.”
