A teenager who fought off a bear to protect her dogs says she ‘didn’t register’ in the moment that the dangerous animal could ‘harm or kill her’.

Hailey Morinico, 17, charged at the predator earlier this week when the animal clambered on top of a wall outside her California home and started pawing at her four pet dogs.

Home surveillance footage showing the shocking moment Hailey pushed the bear went viral after the teen shared it on TikTok.

Appearing with mother Citlally on Good Morning Britain today, the brave teenager said that she ‘no time to think’ when she saw the bear in her garden, and that her ‘mind went blank’ as she shoved the predator off the wall.

She appeared with mother Citlally on Good Morning Britain today. The brave teen said that she ‘no time to think’ when she saw the bear in her garden

‘In the moment, honestly, I saw it was a bear but in my head I didn’t register that a bear could be a dangerous animal that could harm me or kill me,’ she said. ‘I just saw it was picking up my dog and I had to do what I had to do to save her.’

She went on: ‘I went face to face with that bear and when I was face to face I had no time to think. My mind was blank and the first thing that popped into my head was to push it and I was so glad everything worked out fine.’

Hailey’s parents were in the vicinity during the incident, with the teen running over when her dogs started barking.

‘We were around the garden,’ she explained. ‘It was just around the corner of the yard, it’s just crazy. My parents were only a couple feet away from me and it all happened so quick.

‘I’m just so lucky he [the bear] was focusing on so many things, was so disorientated and I rushed so quick. It happened before anyone could process anything at all.’

Miraculously, the teen only ended up with a sprained finger and grazed knee as a result of the encounter.

‘I’m okay,’ she said. ‘I sprained my finger when I was pushing the bear, but it was really like a comedy. You push a bear, get close to it and come out only with this….I’m so thankful we came out unscathed.’

Hailey’s mum Citlally says she had ‘no idea what was going on around the corner’ and after having a ‘panic attack’ was relived her daughter and dogs – Sparkles, Valentina and TJ – were not harmed.

‘I found out when we finally came inside the house and she said the bear had nearly taken Valentina and she said “I pushed it”.

Miraculously, the teen only ended up with a sprained finger and grazed knee as a result of the encounter. She showed off her injuries on Instagram and TikTok

‘After my panic attack I looked at the video, it was just incredible and I was just in tears.’

When asked whether she was angry her daughter had dome something to risky, Citlally said: ‘I don’t think I was angry.

‘I was very thankful she was fine and I just wanted to hug her, I think I went about 50 times to her rooming the night to give her a hug.’

She added: ‘I still get a knot in my throat every time I watch it, I see how close she was to dead and it was so scary.’
