Dad's gambling addiction is ruining his relationship with mum and I

DEAR DEIDRE: MY dad is addicted to gambling and treats my mum poorly because of it.

I am a guy of 24 living with my parents. Dad is 55 and retired from the Armed Forces. Mum is 53.

My relationship with him hit rock-bottom when he retired. He started gambling and brags about it, despite losing more than he wins.

I thought lockdown would stop him but he just does it online instead.

If he has a big win, he splashes out on food or tells Mum to buy something. She never does and instead saves the money, knowing he will later lose it all and more.

Mum looks miserable and rarely smiles as he sits around doing nothing, leaving her to do the chores.

How do I make things better before it’s too late?

DEIDRE SAYS: It is tough but you cannot repair their relationship. What you can do is work on your bond with your dad, which may have a knock-on effect.

Quietly tell him how sad you are to see your mum so low so often and that you believe he needs help for his gambling habit.

You and your mum can find understanding support through gamanon.org.uk.
