‘Collingwood supporters are angry’: The Pies have been caught in transition

Collingwood are on an ominous threshold right now.

This season is being shaped by the new rules and the teams that have adapted best – and in general that are younger and quicker – are thriving. But Collingwood don’t seem to have made that leap.

This week on the Real Footy podcast, Michael Gleeson, Jake Niall and Greg Baum discuss the Pies and how the club has been caught in transition. Why are the Pies continuing to pick older players and set up so defensively? What is Jordan De Goey’s game lacking? And what must coach Nathan Buckley do, or be told to do, for the rest of the season?

Meanwhile, Melbourne revamped their coaching department and it has been significant in their improvement this season. Now 4-0, the pressure has eased on Simon Goodwin. And we ask whether the 2021 game has gone past their most recent vanquished opponents Geelong, or if it’s just a case of missing key personnel?

The Saints were listless against the Bombers but fired back against the Eagles. They showed real grit, players such as Brad Crouch and Jack Steele stood up and delivered and they still have the return of star ruckman Paddy Ryder to look forward to. But even though they rebounded from a poor performance in round three and within the game in round four, should there be concern that they fell into such a trough in the first place?

Also this week, Tigers are 2-2 and have lost two on the trot. But there are some stats from the loss to Port Adelaide that show the situation should be “glass half full” for Damien Hardwick and Richmond.

Plus, the Bombers are playing above expectations and with a lot of spirit, and they are a chance to upset the Lions and former teammate Joe Daniher when they head to the Gabba this weekend. How might things have been different if Daniher, Adam Saad and Orazio Fantasia hadn’t left the club? Have the Dons finally shrugged off the lingering effects of the supplements saga?
